SUMMARY:Unravelling the mystery of Dark Matter with Black Holes [Remote talk]
DESCRIPTION:Primordial black holes (PBHs)\, possibly formed via gravitational collapse of large density perturbations in the very early universe\, are one of the earliest proposed and viable dark matter (DM) candidates. PBHs can make up a large or even entirety of DM over a wide range of masses. Ultralight PBHs in the mass range of 10^{15} – 10^{17} g\, emit particles via Hawking radiation\, act as a decaying DM\, and can be probed via observations of those emitted particles in various space as well as ground based detectors. In this talk\, I will discuss how diffuse supernova neutrino background searches at the Super-Kamiokande neutrino observatory\, measurement of the 511 keV gamma-ray line by INTEGRAL telescope\, observations of low energy Galactic Center photons by the imminent soft gamma-ray telescope AMEGO\, and EDGES measurement of  the global 21-cm signal can set robust\, world-leading exclusions on the fraction of DM composed of ultralight PBHs. Finally\, I will also walk you through a novel formation mechanism of low mass transmuted black holes\, a viable non-primordial solution to sub-Chandrasekhar mass black holes\, pointing out several avenues to test the transmuted origin of low mass black holes.

SUMMARY:The On-Shell Highway to Waveforms
DESCRIPTION:A particle physics approach to describing black hole interactions is opening new avenues for understanding gravitational-wave observations. In this talk\, we will review this paradigm change showing how general relativity naturally emerges from scattering amplitudes. Applications for deriving solutions to Einstein field equations\, the bending of light and waveforms – directly from quantum field theory – are explained.

SUMMARY:Warm dark matter constraints using indirect searches
DESCRIPTION:Warm dark matter (WDM) could explain some small-scale structure observations that have challenged the cold dark matter (CDM) model\, as warm particles suppress structure formation due to free streaming effects. Observing small-scale structure thus provides a valuable way to distinguish between CDM and WDM. In this talk\, I will present a semi-analytical model for the dark matter substructure evolution. Satellite galaxies form within dark matter subhaloes\, and I will discuss constraints on WDM models based on the observed number of satellites in the Milky Way. Moreover\, warm particles such as sterile neutrinos and axion-like particles can decay into photons\, which are consequently detectable by X-ray telescopes. eROSITA will perform an all-sky X-ray survey\, of which I will present its sensitivity to identify dark matter decay with narrow X-ray line emission.

SUMMARY:Hierarchical three-body problem
DESCRIPTION:Abstract : The motion of three bodies can be solved perturbatively when a tightly bound inner binary is orbited by a distant perturber on an elliptic orbit. The exchange of angular momentum between the two orbits gives rise to Kozai-Lidov oscillations of eccentricity and inclination characterizing many different systems in astronomy. In this talk\, I will first review the Newtonian version of the Kozai-Lidov mechanism before introducing the effect of relativistic corrections with applications to gravitational wave astronomy. I will show how one can systematically compute first post-Newtonian terms in the hierarchical three-body problem and discuss their influence on the dynamics of the system. \nFinally\, I will present a new kind of relativistic resonance and its effect on the eccentricity of the inner binary\, which could potentially be measurable in the phase of gravitational waves.

SUMMARY:Modern methods for scattering amplitudes\, with an application to di-photon plus jet production at two-loop order in QCD (remote talk)
DESCRIPTION:Scattering amplitudes play a central role in our understanding of the fundamental laws of nature. On the one hand they constitute the bridge between theory and experiments\, allowing to compute predictions starting from a theoretical model. On the other\, they shed light on the underlying properties of quantum field theories. To both ends\, analytic results for multi-particle multi-loop amplitudes are in high demand. In particular\, the foremost and most urgent challenge is currently represented by five-particle amplitudes at two-loop order. Despite the dramatic recent progress\, such computations remain formidable tasks. I review the cutting edge mathematical methods used in the analytic calculation of scattering amplitudes. As an application\, I present the recent computation of the gluon-initiated contribution to di-photon plus jet production up to two loops in QCD.

SUMMARY:Detached high-mass X-ray binaries : mass transfer and coupling to the magnetosphere
DESCRIPTION:Once massive stars leave the main sequence\, their evolution is largely set by mass loss through intense radiation-driven winds. Stellar multiplicity has been recognized as a ubiquitous feature: stars seldom live an effectively single life. In the advanced evolutionary stages of a massive binary\, mass transfer via stellar winds can become significant and decide the final fate of both bodies. In high mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs)\, which are good progenitor candidates for merging compact objects\, a blue supergiant is in close orbit with a a young and highly magnetized neutron star (NS) or a black hole (BH) which captures a fraction of the stellar wind. \nIn this talk\, I will show how the numerical tool grants us access to accurate estimates of the mass and angular momentum transfer rates in wind-fed HMXBs. After describing the conditions of formation of wind-captured disks around the NS or the BH\, I will discuss the long term evolution of the orbital separation. We will see that HMXBs in the solar neighbourhood spend a significant fraction of their lifetime with an X-ray luminosity above detectable levels. I will present the implications for phases of enhanced mass transfer\, for the spinning up and down of the accretor and for the natal kick of the compact object. Finally\, I will report on recent results concerning particle acceleration in the magnetosphere of a Kerr BH connected to a Keplerian disk\, a mechanism which might be responsible for coronal heating and non-thermal flares. \n– – – \nAfter a seminal research experience with Saul Rappaport at MIT in 2011-2012\, I graduated in Paris in 2016. During my PhD\, I made use of grid-based numerical simulations to characterize the flow surrounding an accreting compact object moving with respect to an ambient medium. In Leuven\, I was granted a Pegasus Marie Curie fellowship to model mass transfer through wind capture in high-mass X-ray binaries. I moved to Grenoble in October this year where I now work with Benoît Cerutti on particle-in-cell simulations of magnetic reconnection in the magnetosphere of black holes.
